Day 5: Jones Hole #3 to Split Mountain

The last big push of the trip, we had about 18 miles to go to the take out. With the higher flow of the Green & Yampa combined at 16,000 cfs we were able to cover the distance in a little over 3 hours. A nice start through Whirlpool Canyon then tortured by mosquitoes and flat water in Island Park before the river narrowed again for the last big rapid - Moonshine. After that it was easy, moving water to Split Mountain.

Day 4: Sea Cliff to Jones Hole #3

Only had about 3 miles to travel by river so we arrived at Jones Hole in plenty of time to hike up the creek to play at Ely Creek (a.k.a. Bikini Falls or Butt Dam Falls) and enjoy our last night on the river with a Mexican Mustache Fiesta.

Day 3: Rippling Brook #2 to Sea Cliff

A slower pace for the day with a short river distance to travel. Started with a side hike out of Rippling Brook up to a 40 ft. waterfall. After the hike we floated down to Echo Park for lunch. Another side hike took us to some amazing petroglyphs and then on to camp at Sea Cliff.

Day 2: Pot Creek #2 to Rippling Brook #2

This was the major whitewater day - three big rapids: Harp, Triplett and Hells Half Mile.

Sam took the conservative line at Triplett

While the raft line was a little tighter at Triplett

Mame and Sam helped to get the raft through at Hell's Half Mile with some added power in the bow.

Day 1: put in to Pot Creek #2

The big rapid of the day was Disaster Falls

The first hammock village of the trip. Sam and the crew of older kids slept out, suspended, every night of the trip.

Father's Day on the river

(we had 13 adults and 12 kids in the group)

Gates of Lodore - at last!

We took the Class IV route to the put in and were very relieved to see this sign.

After a night at the put-in to get the group and gear organized we were on the water at last  - the "gates" are just downstream

Dinosaur National Monument

Before launch on the Gates of Lodore we took a day to visit the Dinosaur Quarry.

As the ranger was talking about fossilized fish scales, Ford found one!
