Mr. Shining Star

Sam's school has a program to recognize positive behavior called Shining Stars. A teacher can pick one student each month to represent the class. Sam is January's star from Mrs. Ferris' class. Friday he got to have a special lunch with the other stars and the principal.

From the 'it could be worse' file:

A California woman has given birth to octuplets. My favorite part:

"The parents and their doctors were surprised when they found an eighth baby during the Caesarean section. 'It is quite easy to miss a baby when you're anticipating seven,' says Dr. Harold Henry, chief of maternal and fetal medicine at the center."

California finale

Was Legoland at last!

Sam couldn't wait to get inside.

We rode the coasters...

and got up close with the models.

And even got a taste of the inauguration even though we couldn't be in D.C. on Tuesday.

Thursday of the trip

Started with a short hike in the Torrey Pines State Reserve with David and Emma.

Continued with a visit to Sam's Great-Great-Aunt Mary Ruth Smith at her new apartment.

Then on to the beach at Oceanside for an afternoon dip and digging in the sand.

And wrapped up with dinner at Aunt Barbara's house in Fallbrook.

Wild on Wednesday

Wednesday we visited the Wild Animal Park with our friends. The tram ride and shows were fun but Sam's favorite part was feeding the Lorikeets. We even went back for a second feeding on our way out of the park.

On the tram with Chip, John and Elena.

California here we are

We arrived in San Diego Saturday night. Sunday we spent at the beach in La Jolla digging in the sand and playing in the surf...

Monday we visited the Scripps Aquarium ...

And today we visited Balboa Park. Of all the museums we decided to start with the Model Railroad Museum and it was a great pick for Sam. He was watching the model trains go around so intently that one of the volunteers gave him the opportunity to come 'inside the fence' and work as an engineer. We even got a behind the scenes tour!

Cover boys

I was cleaning out the desk today in anticipation of moving and came across this from '07. Wired had a cross-promotion going with Xerox. The first 1,000 or so subscribers to submit a photo got customized covers. (Sam still loves his Little Guy shirt, he wore it today)

Resolution

Sam's school is one of the first sites in town to host a Zest Quest health coach, Ms. Nichol. She goes around to all the classes giving a 30 minute lesson on their seven healthy habits. One is to limit TV and video games to 60 minutes or less. It hasn't been too hard for Sam, since we still don't own a television. Which makes it all the more interesting that he picked it as his healthy goal for the year. Perhaps his grandmothers know something about that...

Something Curious

Mame and Sam spent the day exploring the Health Adventure in downtown Asheville. They wanted to catch the Curious George exhibit before it moves later this month.

Sam's favorite part was sending this email to me.

our new abode?

Just before Christmas we found this house for sale. Made an offer the following week and arrived at a price on New Year's day. The inspection went well and now we are heading toward closing on Feb. 12. If all goes well we'll be settling in on Valentine's Day.

the skating theme continues

Sam and I took advantage of his last weekday of vacation and gave ice skating a try at the Asheville Civic Center. No offers from Skating With The Stars - but no broken bones either.

Happy New Year

Los Flemings started off 2009 with a visit to Boone, NC to see Tallahassee friends the Dodds. They came north to get a taste of winter. They were not disappointed. Activities earlier in the week included snow tubing and ice skating. Here we stopped to check out the icicles with Anna and Wyatt.

So for the afternoon we did an activity appropriate to Floridians - let the kids swim in the indoor pool at their hotel.
