Gauleyfest

In September he Keener crew met up with a couple of their coaches for a mini-reunion of sorts on the Upper Gauley in West Virginia. It was Sam and Davis's first time on one of the premier rivers in the southeast. Dad's (Ben, Brian and Brent) shadowed the kids in the Sineath raft.

Birthday Float

Another great crowd and fun on the water.

Third Grade!

(Sam declined to have his picture taken for his first day of 9th grade)

The Great American Eclipse, August 21

Was enjoyed in the comfort and company of the kind hosts on Mistletoe Lane in Sylva. We were fortunate to get a break in the clouds during totality and a wonderful view of the corona.

Sam watched from a parking lot in Canton with his teammates on the Asheville High soccer team on their way to his first game in a Cougar uniform against Pisgah High.

Pawleys Island, August 2017

The last hurrah of summer - a week at Pawleys Island with kayaking, biking, boogie boarding, kite flying, digging in the sand, paddle boarding, sunrise walks and one hilarious attempt at crabbing.

Keener retrieval mission

Ben and Brian made the trip north to Canada to retrieve the kayak campers. The boys led us down the Ottawa and then we had an amazing trip home with stops on the Black River near Watertown, NY; the Upper Youghiogheny near Friendsville, Maryland; and the New River in West Virginia.

The Camp Greenville tradition continues

While Sam was off in Canada, Ford (right) and Jack got their first taste of summer at Camp Greenville. They loved the new slides at the relocated waterfront, all the activities and sleeping out on their pack out.

Keeners 2017

A big highlight of Sam's summer was joining his friends Davis, Rachel and Olivia for kayak camp on the Ottawa River in Ontario for three weeks. The first year campers come home certified in Wilderness First Aid and Swiftwater Rescue. They got the opportunity to see the river at different stages as the water level fluctuated from summer rains and made huge progress on their kayaking skills. Sam got the award for most improved for the session.

Week of Rivers, July 2017

We returned to Smoky Mountain Meadows near Bryson City for Week of Rivers in early July. Some highlights this year included Jack and Ford's first trip on Section 3.5 of the Chattooga, Ford and Ben's first tandem canoe run on the Pigeon, some days on the Ocoee with the big kids, Mame's first complete solo run of the Upper Nantahala, and all 3 Fleming boys coming home with new, used boats.
