The busking life

Sam and classmates provided a musical prelude to the main presentation of the eighth grade "Appalachian Journey" at last night's shindig at Hickory Nut Gap Farm. We were impressed all around with this fine group of students.

Fall Family Night

Was the public debut of Flat Ford and Flat Jack - projects of the "Where we live" expedition. Inspired by the book "Flat Stanley", each student sent a flat version of themselves off to visit a friend in another state.

Flat Ford (left) visited a friend from the summer raft trip who lives in Hailey, Idaho. His adventure included a trip to Craters of the Moon National Monument.

Flat Jack went international and visited friend in Tamworth, Ontario. Flat Jack got to ride on a sailboat in Lake Ontario.

Ride of the Flaming Gnarwhals!

Oct. 8th Sam and I got to participate in our first Ocoee Race put on by the Tennessee Valley Canoe Club with friends Brian and Davis Sineath. Dubbed the Flaming Gnarwhals by the boys we made a valiant effort and finished fourth out of six rafts - only 15 seconds behind the 3rd place boat. After our race lap we got in our hard boats and made another lap. Amazing the difference in confidence of these two boys from their first trip down the Ocoee back in July.

Gnarwhals pumped for the race

Sam caught air at Hell Hole

and then jumped back in to surf it!

Mountain mist

Another great weekend at The Mountain Retreat and Learning Center with our UUCA community. Misty morning at meditation rock on Saturday but beautiful weather on Sunday morning.
