the nature preserve on park st.

Sam and I were sitting in our backyard this evening at our little picnic table when the mother cottontail came to check on her babies under a squash plant in our garden. While we were watching her a red-tailed hawk came swooping toward a bird at our feeder but missed.

We are off to Asheville this weekend to search for our next abode. We're certainly excited but I'm going to miss our little nature nook here in Cary.

A little pomp and circumstance

The last week of school Sam's teacher organized a graduation for the kindergarten class. We all walked about 6 blocks from the school to her house. There the kids donned mortar boards and received their certificates. It was followed with an ice cream reception.

Sam gets his certificate from Ms. Liane.

The graduates up close.

Ridin' the rails

To mark the passing of U. Utah Phillips, we took the train ride today on the New Hope Valley Railroad. We took the 12:15 on engine 17 from Bonsal to New Hill and back. The railroad is run by the N.C. Railroad Museum and the East Carolina Chapter of the National Railway Historical Society. It is an impressive operation given that it is all volunteer. They run trains the first Sunday of every month from May to December.

We arrived a little early to tour around. While we were waiting, old number 399, one of the diesel engines, was moving from one track to another. After it made the switch the engineer waved to Sam and I to climb aboard. We got to take a short ride in the cab!

Enjoying the ride.
